STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers are at the forefront of innovation and economic growth worldwide. Yet, in Cameroon, like in many other countries, girls remain underrepresented in these fields. Encouraging more girls to pursue STEM careers is not just a matter of gender equality; it’s a strategic move to unlock untapped potential and drive national development.
Adaptative strategies to make this a reality:
1. Promote Early Exposure to STEM
Introducing STEM concepts to girls at an early age is crucial. Initiatives such as after-school coding clubs, science fairs, and robotics workshops can spark their interest. Providing hands-on experiences and practical learning opportunities helps demystify STEM fields and makes them more appealing.
2. Provide Female Role Models and Mentors
Representation matters. Connecting girls with female role models in STEM careers can inspire them to envision themselves in similar roles. Mentorship programs allow young girls to interact with women who have navigated and succeeded in STEM, providing guidance and encouragement.

3. Address Gender Stereotypes in Education
Societal and cultural stereotypes often discourage girls from pursuing STEM. Schools and communities must actively challenge these biases by promoting gender-neutral teaching practices, showcasing the achievements of women in STEM, and encouraging both boys and girls to explore all career paths.
4. Increase Access to Resources and Opportunities
Lack of access to resources such as computers, internet connectivity, and STEM-related materials can limit girls’ participation. Providing scholarships, grants, and access to STEM programs ensures that financial barriers do not hinder their progress.
There are many organizations and programs in Cameroon that support girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). These include:
- OWSD Cameroon National Chapter: A chapter of the Organization for Women in Science for Development that advocates for gender equality in STEM. The chapter also provides training and resources for women scientists.
- She’s STEM Foundation: A non-profit organization that aims to empower women and girls through education, gender equality, and community development.
- African Women In Tech Startups (AfricanWITS): An organization that hosts events to encourage girls to pursue STEM careers.
- TechGirls: A program sponsored by the US government that provides summer exchange opportunities for young women to learn about STEM careers.
- The STEM Prize: An award that recognizes young innovators in Cameroon.
- Data Girl Tech: An organization that provides support and resources for women in tech in Cameroon.
5. Engage Parents and Communities
Parents and community leaders play a pivotal role in shaping girls’ career aspirations. Raising awareness about the importance of STEM careers and addressing misconceptions can create a supportive environment. Community-driven initiatives can further encourage girls to explore these fields.
Conclusion
Encouraging more girls to pursue STEM careers in Cameroon requires a collaborative effort from schools, communities, governments, and organizations. By implementing these strategies, we can empower young girls to break barriers, explore STEM opportunities, and contribute to the country’s technological and economic growth. The future of STEM in Cameroon is brighter when it includes everyone.
